Judith Wegmann

Judith Wegmann is a Swiss pianist, born in the canton of Zug and currently lives in Biel. She started playing the piano at the age of six. She studied first at the Jazz School in Lucerne and the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, where she spent six years intensely studying jazz and improvised music.

She then studied classical music in Lucerne and Neuchâtel and graduated with a Master of Arts in piano. This was followed by further studies in the classical repertoire, including in Geneva. She regularly attended master classes in Switzerland, France and Austria. In 2014, she completed a further Master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel. During this time, she devoted herself to free improvisation and contemporary music and deepened her knowledge under the guidance of numerous professors.

As a classical pianist and chamber musician, she regularly performs in various ensembles. As a cross-genre pianist, she conceives and combines contemporary music with improvised music in her work and is thus internationally active.

In recent years, the pianist has artistically explored the theme of time – with all the facets that this term entails – and developed various projects that deal intensively with this theme. Judith Wegmann: “It’s about the experience of time, transience, decay and emergence – all aspects of time. Of course, this is also linked to the individual story of life.” (Interview, ZZ 2019). In this context, she realized “le souffle du temps I and II”, two internationally acclaimed recordings that were published by HatHut.

At the same time, she worked intensively on the late compositions of Morton Feldman, which she performs time and again. She also recorded the two works “Triadic Memories” and “For John Cage” for the label. This was followed by the recording “Kon.Takte” with Stockhausen’s composition for trio. And Two2 by John Cage and another with works by Philip Glass will be released soon.

She has received several awards for her independent artistic work. In 2021, she was awarded the prestigious “Zuger Werkjahr 2021”.
