Jos Smolders is a figure deeply embedded within the landscape of Dutch experimental electronic music. Born in Deurne in 1960, his relationship with sound began early, sparked by the exploration of a Philips reel-to-reel recorder during his teenage years. This initial curiosity blossomed into a lifelong dedication to sonic exploration.

His trajectory diverged from conventional paths. Though he initially pursued architectural studies, the pull of sound proved too strong, leading him to delve into the study of electronic and recorded music. This period of self-directed learning laid the groundwork for his multifaceted career.

Smolders’s contributions to the underground electronic scene are extensive. He’s a founding member of the electroacoustic ensemble THU20, a group that has played a significant role in shaping the Dutch experimental soundscape. His solo work, released across various formats, showcases his meticulous approach to sound design and composition.

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Smolders has made significant contributions to the broader music community. He founded the online magazine and MP3 label Earlabs, providing a platform for experimental sound artists. His EARLabs Studios serves as a hub for both creation and preservation, reflecting his expertise in mastering and sound restoration.

He has also shown a great ability to collaborate with other artist, as seen in his work with Guido Nijs, and Koen Delaere.
